Those of you who know me know that ever since I moved to Vienna in 2009 I fell in love with this city and I am lucky to call it my home. For me Vienna is the perfect combination of city life and nature. One second you’re stunning at the majestic buildings in the first district and a 15 minutes tube ride later you’re taking a dip in the Danube river on the Donauinsel. Vienna offers so many great restaurants, cafés, bars and shops, but you also find a lot of green spots and parks. After all, Sissi lived there, so how can it not be wonderful.
Over the years Vienna has definitely turned into vegan hot spot. Everywhere you turn there are health food stores and vegan cafés and bakeries. The 7th district is literally becoming a vegan (and hipster) oasis. If you’re planning on travelling to Vienna, believe me you won’t be disappointed!
Here are a few of my favourite places in town (I’ll probably do a second post because the list is just soooo long):
The Juice Factory
The Juice Factory near the university is definitely one of my favourite spots. Their wonderful juices are the perfect pick me up during a long study session. Italian stallion and Iron Lady are my favourites. For now they have 3 outlets, one of them being at the airport, so you can load up on greens before you take off.
Schottengasse 4, 1010 Vienna
Café Wirr is located in the 7th district and offers a laid back atmosphere, a nice terrace (We call it Schanigarten) and a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. A nice place for a few drinks.
Burggasse 70, 1070 Vienna
Yamm!Yamm, a vegetarian restaurant near Schottentor (and on Naschmarkt), offers a huge buffet with all kinds of vegetarian and vegan dishes. It is quite expensive though (especially when you eat as much as I do: you pay by the weight of your plate), but it is omnivore approved and has some of the best vegan desserts in town.
Universitätsring 10, 1010 Vienna
My favourite place to have sushi is Teka Sushi near Nußdorferstrasse. Their legendary ‘Mix O’ has been my go to dish for years. Recently I also tried their ramen and udon soup which are great to. Don’t miss out on the Mochi dessert, yummmm!
Billrothstraße 5, 1190 Vienna
There are also two Loving Hut Restaurants in Vienna. The one in the 7th district is more central and in my opinion easier to get to. There they offer a wide variety of delicious dishes from all over the world, whereas the one in the 10th district is more Asian inspired.
Neubaugürtel 38, 1070 Vienna
Favoritenstrasse 156, 1100 Vienna
Vienna offers a wide range of middle eastern cuisine. One dish is for sure falafel with hummus and pita bread. On Naschmarkt you can find vegan falafel wraps at Dr. Falafel’s and they are without doubt one of the best in town! Omnomnom!
Naschmarkt Stand 560, 1060 Vienna
In case you are craving some authentic Vietnamese food head over to Tata’s. You’ll find many vegan options on the menu and you won’t be disappointed!
Seidengasse 23, 1070 Vienna
This place is probably the one place I miss the most, being out of town for nearly a year now! If you have a sweet tooth make sure to check out Veganista Ice Cream. In my eyes, the best vegan ice cream in town! They also published a book (Veganista: Die neue Eiszeit) with loads of yummy recipes. I tried many of their recipes and they turned out great.
Neustiftgasse 23/3, 1070 Vienna
This place offers without doubt the most authentic Thai food I have ever eaten outside of Thailand so don’t miss out!
Albertgasse 15, 1080 Vienna
Café Ulrich is a nice place to have brunch on the weekend in the summer. They have a nice terrace and offer super yummy food. Try the Vegan Wake Up.
St. Ulrichsplatz, 1070 Vienna
If you long for a Mexican fix, this is the place to go. They offer bowls, classic burritos and tacos and everything can easily be veganized. Olé!
Wipplingerstraße 23, 1010 Vienna
Swing Kitchen is in our eyes the best burger restaurant in town! This place is 100% omnivore approved and we cannot even begin to tell you how good the burgers are! Our favourite is the Chili Burger and the Falafel Wrap. Absolutely yumm!
Schottenfeldgasse 3, 1070 Vienna
When you fancy some fresh juice after (or during) a long shopping trip on Mariahilfer Street, this place is perfect to grab some vitamins on the go. A bit pricey though, but very delicious.
Neubaugasse 13, 1070 Vienna
Another great burger place we came across while on the hunt for food in our study session breaks in the library. They offer two vegan alternatives: a black bean patty or seitan. We tried both and love the black bean patty.
Liechtensteinstrasse 69, 1090 Vienna
Harvest BistroUnfortunately we don’t have any pictures of the food (yet) but this place is heaven! On Saturdays and Sundays (and Holidays) they offer an all vegan (all you can eat) buffet!
Karmeliterplatz 1, 1020 Vienna
We only spotted this place recently and are in love. It is our go to place when we are in the Mariahilf area. They offer fresh and healthy meals and nearly everything on their menu can be made vegan. We love the Singapore Laksa and the Soba Noodle Soup.
Zollergasse 14, 1070 Vienna
WeltcaféOldie but goodie. Weltcafé offers many vegan options and has a very relaxed and chilled atmosphere. It is near the university so you’ll find tons of students there as it is the perfect spot to grab lunch or a matcha latte in between lectures.
Schwarzspanierstr. 15, 1090 Vienna
Maschu-MaschuAs we told you, people go crazy over falafels here in Vienna and besides Dr. Falafel, Maschu Maschu is also a great place to get your oriental fix. Every vegan item is clearly marked on the menu and prices are really affordable.
Neubaugasse 20, 1070 Vienna
For a lazy movie night at home there is nothing better than take out food. The vegan curries from Bio Frische are my personal favourites. I love the Mango Lime Korma!
What are your favourite places in Vienna? Do you have any secret tips?
